Monteverde Cloud Forest: March Break Travel Journal Post #3

Between our three groups we saw many different animals, plants, and insects crawling through the forest. The list includes: frogs, tarantulas, scorpions, clicking beetles, army ants, butterflies, sleeping birds, strangle-fig trees, and more. When we reached the furthest depth of our hike the group turned off all the flashlights and soaked in the sounds of the forest and the truest dark.

Zip lining, Canyoneering, and Loving Los Lagos

We are about to depart from the incredible Los Lagos Resort after an action-packed three days here in La Fortuna. On Tuesday we returned to Proyecto Asis to continue our volunteer work cleaning the enclosures, scrubbing the Macaw cage, and clearing the swamp for the wild pigs’ new home. After a morning of hard work we said goodbye to our new animal friends and hurried back to the hotel to change and head out to our first optional excursion.

Arrival in Arenal: March Break Travel Journal Post #1

For our first day, many of us were very excited to be visiting Proyecto Asis, the animal rescue centre outside of La Fortuna. Founded in 1997, Project Asis cares for native Costa Rican animals that have been turned in due to injuries, or have been confiscated by authorities as illegal pets. This facility is run entirely on donations, and relies on volunteers and private donations to care for hundreds of animals. They do their best to rehabilitate and release many of them, although many will call Asis their long-term home.
