I’m currently writing this on our 2 hour bus trip back to Playa Del Carmen and I cannot stop thinking about the amazing day we had today! Today over 20 students and staff got to travel off the island and had the opportunity to see one of the seven wonders of the world, Chichen Itza! Although we’re loving the island life and Cozumel, it was nice to venture off the island and learn/see more about Mexico.
It was an early morning as we had to be out of the hotel by 6:30am to catch the ferry. We all caught up on our sleep on the ferry ride over as well as the 2 hour drive to Chichen Itza. We were fortunate to have our amazing tour guide, Antonio, take us around Chichen Itza and explain not only the history behind the main temple called “El Castillo” (the castle) but also the many other temples that still remain. It was scorching hot out in the open area without much shade but the group stayed in such great spirits, keeping in mind we would have a chance to cool off at the cenote. After getting all of our pictures and a group shot in front of El Castillo/Temple of Kukulcan, we headed off for a delicious buffet lunch. After lunch we finally got to cool off in the giant sinkhole (cenote in Spanish). This had to be our favourite part of the day!! Everybody had so much fun cliff jumping and taking pictures together–shoutout to whoever invented waterproof phone cases! We got some awesome diving pictures and group shots and by 4:30 we were ready to pack up and head out.
We’re now getting off our bus in Playa del Carmen and have to catch our ferry back to Cozumel. With many more excursions to come–such as horseback riding tomorrow morning–we’ll have plenty more to tell you about, along with lots of pictures to share! Also good luck to our PADI students writing their exam tomorrow for scuba diving 🙂
