Our first weekend in Playas Del Coco was a success!

Saturday a group of 21 students ventured out to Playa Tamarindo for some surf lessons to hang 10. Our instructors were informative and helpful and insured us that all of our students were successful in ‘popping’ up and most were able to ride out the waves all the way to the beach! After our surfing excursion we went for lunch at the local Subway for a ‘taste of home’. Once the students were done eating we had some extra time to walk up and down the main street of the sleepy surf town and do some shopping.

The rest of the students who remained at the villas on Saturday morning enjoyed some relaxing time by the pool, hanging out at the beach, running errands and catching up on schoolwork and their studies.

Later in the evening a birthday party was held for Eamonn who turned 17! The dinner hall was decorated with streamers and balloons and we sang him Happy Birthday while he blew out the candles on his vanilla honey cake.

Sunday morning was an early start for the students who signed up for the animal safari tour with breakfast starting at 7:00am sharp. After a delicious meal of eggs and French toast 20 students piled into the bus for an hour and a half drive to the national park for our river cruise safari.

Our knowledgeable river guide and driver took us to see the sights and educated us on the park’s interesting history and conservation efforts. Our driver was able to manoeuvre our motorboat and get us up close and personal with sleeping fruit bats, swimming crocodiles, green and black iguanas, multiple types of herrings, palm-sized grasshoppers, and adorable howler monkeys (who actually boarded the watercraft).

Lunch was held at an authentic Costa Rican ranch in the countryside and consisted of rice, beans and chicken along with rice pudding and coffee for dessert. On the ranch property the students were able to pet and interact with pigs and piglets, horses, turtles, chickens, roosters, wild turkeys, and iguanas. After our delicious lunch we got back onto the bus and headed back to our villas in Playas Del Coco just in time for afternoon class to begin.
