About this study abroad Program
Spain is a country truly like no other, historically ruled by leaders from the north, south, and even as far as Africa. As a result, multiculturalism and diversity are woven throughout the fabric of this warm and passionate county. With three separate languages (Castilian Spanish, Catalan, and the unique Basque, which is unrelated to any other known language), Spain offers a full cultural journey within its borders.
Explore the Golden Age streets of Madrid, a veritable museum of outdoor sculptures, and enjoy nature in one of the city’s numerous parks. View the contemporary art collection of the Reina Sofia, gaze at classic works at the Prado, study in Retiro Park, people-watch at the cafés in Plaza Mayor, and shop at Mercado de San Miguel.
Day trip to Basque Country, an autonomous region in northern Spain that’s home to the Basque people and the city of Bilbao, where you’ll visit the famous Guggenheim Museum, a contemporary masterpiece of modern architecture.
A short drive away is the sophisticated seaside city of San Sebastián, boasting one of the finest urban beaches in the world and one of Europe’s best locations to catch a wave, La Concha! The adrenaline doesn’t stop there—experience the thrill of the running of the bulls during the San Fermín festival on an excursion to Pamplona.
Travel south and wander through the beautiful quarters of Barcelona, immersing yourself in Catalan language, culture, and cuisine. Sun yourself at the glamorous Sitges Beach; be awestruck by examples of Antoni Gaudí’s architecture, including the Sagrada Família and Park Güell; study the intricacies of the elaborate buildings in the Gothic Quarter; and amble down café-lined streets in search of the perfect souvenir to bring home.
SPECIAL PROGRAM NOTE: During the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, students will view the opening events from the safety of the stand in the Plaza de Toros arena, before the bull run gets underway.

Aquopolis Waterpark (Madrid)
Thrills and spills are the order of the day at Aquopolis waterpark, where there’s something for everyone. Located in Villanueva de la Cañada in the city’s western suburbs, this wet and wild world is packed with attractions of all heights and shapes, from white-knuckle rides to gentle slides.
Try exciting rides such as the ‘Turbolance’, the Black Hole or the Wavesurfer, and other more relaxing attractions, including a variety of whirlpools, two rivers and soft slides. There are more than a dozen water slides, including daredevil magnets such as the Kamikaze and the Angel’s Leap – all in beautifully landscaped surroundings. This is a park where you can go from a thrilling adrenalin rush to the peaceful quiet of the lush gardens in a matter of moments. You’ll be able to let yourself go in the Boomerang, the enclosed slides, the Zig Zag for the most daring or the easy-going attractions such as the Soft Slides and the Wave Pool.
Please bring swimwear, towel, sunscreen, water and snacks. Leave valuables at the hotel.
Zip Lining & High Ropes at Europa Park (Madrid)
Enjoy an afternoon exploring the monuments of Europe, zip-lining, and scrambling along a high-ropes course – all in one place!
Europa Park sits on the outskirts of Madrid and is a beautiful space with smaller replicas of some of Europe’s most well-known sites. Take a selfie in front of Paris’ Eiffel Tower, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate or London’s Tower Bridge, and explore other landmarks from, amongst others, Brussels, Lisbon, and Copenhagen.
Then we’ll get our adrenaline going and tackle the adventure course, a 75+ minute route of bridges, swings, and zip-lines, and culminate our visit with a 180m zip-line across the lake! This course is not for the faint of heart.
It will be hot in Madrid in July so we recommend you bring water, sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses. Please wear running shoes.
Minimum height to participate: 1m55 (approx. 5ft)
Surf Lesson (San Sebastian)
Take to the waves and learn to surf on one of the best surf beaches in Europe, Zurriola Beach. Local, national and international competitions are held here between spring and autumn, so you may just get to watch and learn from some of the very best!
You’ll enjoy a lesson on land with a qualified instructor before getting wet and attempting to hang ten in the surf. This exhilarating experience may leave you exhausted, but you’ll never forget the moment you caught your first wave!
Includes surfboard rental, wetsuit, access to changing rooms, lockers and hot showers. Please bring swimwear, sunscreen and water.
Cycling by the Sea (Barcelona)
Take in the sights of Barcelona on a tour by the sea. We begin close to the Old Harbour and cruise along the boardwalk, with our guide.
From day to night La Barceloneta is the liveliest beach in the city and the best place to try fresh fish or paella. It’s here where fishermen used to live and sell their wares in the narrow streets. Next up is the Olympic harbour, built in 1992 for the Olympic Games, and the Forum, an expansive exhibition area, before we turn inland to pass through the Poblenou district, a neighbourhood of hip cafes and regenerated industrial buildings and end at the beautiful Ciutadella Park, home to Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf.
The cycling on this tour is easy going, on flat ground, with very little traffic. Our knowledgeable guide will show us the way and we’ll discover some of the city’s history, and have the opportunity for photo stops along the way.
Please wear suitable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, bring water and sunscreen. Helmets available upon request. Tour will last approx. 3 hrs.
Sailing Excursion (Barcelona)
This is a great activity and guaranteed fun for all!
Enjoy a 3-hour cruise of the Costa Brava shoreline by boat. There’s plenty of space to spread out and sunbathe on deck. After some time sailing, we’ll set the anchor to enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool water.
An unforgettable way to enjoy and explore the Balearic Sea!
Wear your swimsuit. Make sure you bring your flip-flops (no black soled shoes are allowed), towel and snorkel. Please also bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and snacks.
Hiking in the Pyrenees (Barcelona)
On this full-day excursion we will discover the beautiful Valle de Nuria. We will enjoy some of the most peaceful and awe-inspiring countrysides of the region in this not-to-be-missed day excursion.
Leaving Barcelona after an early breakfast, we stop en route to stretch our legs at a couple of traditional Catalan towns, before reaching the village of Queralbs. From here we take a cog railway train up the mountain to Nuria (apart from hiking, this is the only way to access the valley).
After spending time relaxing in the sunshine beside the lake, viewing the animals at the farm and enjoying a picnic, we begin our hike down the mountain. This hike follows a well-signed route, with some steep descents, and is about 7km, taking about 2.5-3 hours meeting our bus back in Queralbs, and returning to Barcelona for dinner.
Please remember to bring sunscreen, water, and a jacket for the cooler temperatures at the mountaintop (there may still be some snow on the ground!) and wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. Please bring a picnic lunch and snacks, though there will be places to purchase food. Don’t forget your camera!
