Spain & Rome and the Greek Islands 2018 Blyth Academy International Summers Program

About this Program

Spain is a country truly like no other, historically ruled by leaders from the north, south, and even as far as Africa. As a result, multiculturalism and diversity are woven throughout the fabric of this warm and passionate country. With three separate languages (Castilian Spanish, Catalan, and the unique Basque, which is unrelated to any other known language), Spain offers a full cultural journey within its borders.

Explore the Golden Age streets of Madrid, a veritable museum of outdoor sculptures, and enjoy nature in one of the city’s numerous parks. View the contemporary art collection of the Reina Sofia, gaze at classic works at the Prado, study in Retiro Park, people-watch at the cafés in Plaza Mayor, and shop at Mercado de San Miguel.

Head north to Basque Country, an autonomous region in northern Spain that’s home to the Basque people and the city of Bilbao, where you’ll visit the famous Guggenheim Museum, a contemporary masterpiece of modern architecture. A short drive away is the sophisticated seaside city of San Sebastián, boasting one of the finest urban beaches in the world and one of Europe’s best locations to catch a wave, La Concha! The adrenalin doesn’t stop there—experience the thrill of the running of the bulls during the San Fermín festival on an excursion to Pamplona.

Travel south and wander through the beautiful quarters of Barcelona, immersing yourself in Catalan language, culture, and cuisine. Sun yourself at the glamorous Sitges Beach; be awestruck by examples of Antoni Gaudí’s architecture, including the Sagrada Família and Park Güell; study the intricacies of the elaborate buildings in the Gothic Quarter; and amble down café lined streets in search of the perfect souvenir.

Our program then travels to Rome, where students will explore the Colosseum and Roman Forum and learn how classical mythology and philosophy shaped Western civilization. Discover beauty at the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, and learn about power and grandeur at Vatican City. While in Italy, consider taking the opportunity to visit Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance.

Visit Athens and explore both classical and modern Greece. Hike through the Acropolis and take in the glory of the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike. Explore the shops in Athens’ lively modern marketplace, Plaka, which is teeming with cafés, restaurants, and night-life. Study the history of this ancient city where so much of Greece’s history comes to life in local museums and galleries.

Leave the land behind and board private yachts for sailing and learning in the Argo-Saronic Islands. As you explore this unique archipelago, each island offers a stunning backdrop for your studies.

Head ashore in Kalamata, on the beaches of the Peloponnese, and opt to visit Olympia, site of the first Olympic Games, and Sparta.

Before heading home, celebrate Greek culture and food at a farewell banquet.
