Nicaragua 2018 Blyth Academy International Summers Program

About This Program

Nicaragua’s cool surf towns, gorgeous coastal beaches, lush rainforests, and volcanic peaks make it one of the must-see places in Latin America. Compared with its well-traversed neighbour to the south, Costa Rica, Nicaragua offers visitors a less touristy experience, with destinations and sights not overcrowded with other travellers.

Beautiful colonial architecture dots two of the oldest cities in the country, León and Granada. Home to both monuments and historical places, León plays host to the Basílica de la Asunción, the largest cathedral in Central America, and the 214-year-old National Autonomous University of Nicaragua. Granada, Nicaragua’s beautiful colonial city and the first European city in mainland America, offers breathtaking buildings and loads of culture, with museums, restaurants, and infinite photo opportunities.

Experience a slower pace in the laid-back beachside town of San Juan del Sur, where a wide brown-sugar beach is the perfect backdrop for relaxing in the sun, playing beach volleyball, taking a surfing lesson, and catching glorious sunsets that illuminate the beach.

Nature lovers will have ample time for outdoor thrills, including zip lining through the Nicaraguan treetops, diving in the swimming hole at Ojo de Agua, taking a boat trip to the Isletas de Granada, and hiking through the cloud forests of Ometepe Island to spot howler monkeys, birds, and more than 1,700 petroglyph rock carvings. Students will have the option to board down the slopes of the Cerro Negro Volcano, a thrill of a lifetime that will make for amazing Instagram moments they can remember forever.

Optional Excursions

The following are examples of optional excursions our students went on last year, and are subject to change. Please take a look and don’t forget to check back soon for the final list of excursions, and your chance to register!

Volcano boarding at Cerro Negro, León

Have you ever dreamed of climbing an active volcano then surfing down its slope?

This excursion isn’t for the faint-hearted. You will travel from León, approximately 1 hour to the Cerro Negro volcano. This active volcano last erupted in 1999, but don’t worry! Its activity is carefully monitored.

First, you will hike for about an hour to reach the summit of the volcano. The ascent is steep, and tough, but the views are rewarding. The absence of trees provides fantastic scenery, and upon reaching the top visitors have a 360 degree view of the area.
Then the fun begins as you slide down the 728 meter high volcano and the speed, well it really depends on how fast you want to go!

In order to participate, you must be able to hike a steep, rocky path. Long pants and hiking shoes are required.

Price: $70

Sailing Day Excursion, San Juan del Sur

Sail away for the day to sun-drenched beaches and dream of a day in paradise. On our private yacht, our captain will set sail and take us to discover the untouched stretches of coastline. We will enjoy snacks and soft drinks aboard the boat, swim in the turquoise ocean, and land at pristine beaches. We’ll return to San Juan del Sur and dock as the sun sets.

Lunch is included. Remember to bring your beach towel, sunscreen and bathing suit.

Half Day Sport Fishing, San Juan del Sur

May through October is the best time to fish out of San Juan del Sur, so we are in Nicaragua at the perfect time to catch marlin, dorado, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, sierra mackerel, barracudas, snapper, grouper and more!

While we’re out on the boat, keep your eyes peeled for manta rays jumping out of the water, Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles, as well as awesome Humpback whales. A school of dolphins may even swim right up alongside the boat while on the way to the fishing grounds!

After our excursion we will bring our fish back to the hotel where, with help, we will prep, cook and eat what we catch!

Juice, fresh fruit and sandwiches are included.

Price: $125

Nicaraguan Cooking Class, San Juan del Sur

Go hands-on with this delicious cuisine! We will spend the early evening sampling Nicaraguan specialties and making gallo pinto – the most traditional Nicaraguan dish, which incorporates fried rice, onion, and sweet pepper, along with red beans boiled with garlic. We will start from the very beginning, learning the proper way to soak the beans before cooking, and see the dish through to its completion! We’ll also learn how to make the best guacamole ever! Once finished, we will enjoy the fruits of our labour. This is certainly a skill to take home.

Price: $35

Horseback Riding, San Juan del Sur

Horseback riding is a great way to get up close and personal with the beautiful country of Nicaragua.

On this excursion we will visit a private local ranch, where we’ll meet our well-cared for and loved horses. The ride leaves from the ranch through the local community, into open fields and over hilltops for spectacular views, crossing the river several times for excellent wildlife viewing (we almost always see monkeys!) and then to a secluded beach for a refreshment break and more riding adrenalin.

Our knowledgeable trail boss will lead the way and a portion of your ride fee will go to the ranch’s local community development fund. Our ride will be scheduled to arrive at the beach at low tide for safety and a bigger beach to ride on.

If you’ve never been on a horse before, or if you are an experienced rider, you horse will be chosen based on your experience level. All horses are well trained and you can take it slow, or trot and canter to your delight!

Please note: Riding will be Western Style, and there is a rider weight limit of 210lbs. Please bring long pants. Boots and cowboy hats will be provided.

Price: $125

Olive Ridley Sea Turtles Sanctuary, San Juan del Sur

Playa La Flor Wildlife Reserve is one of seven nesting sites in the world for the endangered Olive Ridley Sea Turtles.

Seven massive arribadas occur each year, all taking place between July and January. During an arribada, thousands of sea turtles will arrive at the same time to the beach to lay their eggs. This way, the hatchlings will swarm the beach in huge numbers and in doing so they increase their chance of survival.

Come and witness this incredible ancient creature nesting or hatching on the shore of this beautiful wildlife reserve, located south of San Juan del Sur.

Price: $80

Community Service, San Juan del Sur

Community Service is an important aspect of every Blyth Academy International Summer Program. We try to instill a sense of global responsibility in all of our students as they explore the world with us. Students may earn 3-4 community service hours which can be applied towards your community service requirements in Ontario.

More importantly, this experience offers the opportunity to interact with locals and create meaningful ties to our host community.
