London, Oxford, Ireland & Italy 2018 Blyth Academy International Summers Program

About This Program

A tour through some of classical literature’s most inspirational cities and towns, this program will be a treat for the academics at heart.

In London, stay at Imperial College, take in St. Paul’s Cathedral, and study Shakespeare while visiting the stage his plays were created for at the Globe theatre. Explore the British Museum before learning the history of the Tower of London and viewing the Crown Jewels inside.

Travel to Oxford, the city of dreaming spires, and take up residence at St Hilda’s College, the perfect home base for exploring this historic university. Visit the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, and punt down the River Cherwell.

Cross the Irish Sea and step into the laid-back and friendly west-coast town of Galway, Ireland. Visit the awe-inspiring Cliffs of Moher, enjoying coastal walks along the rugged cliffs, and spend time beach combing along the Atlantic coast, and listening to live music filling the streets.

Settle in at the historic Trinity College in Dublin and explore the campus in the heart of the city. Use your Dublin Pass to join a hop-on, hop-off bus tour and choose which of the top attractions to visit, including the Guinness Storehouse, the trendy Temple Bar neighbourhood, the Viking museum, and the shops of Grafton Street, just steps from your residence.

Step into another time in Rome, the Eternal City, and see all of the important sites, from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum to Trevi Fountain, the Vatican and its Sistine Chapel, and the Spanish Steps. Opt to visit Ostia Beach and the Ostia Antica ruins, and feast on Italian cuisine before saying ciao to your classical tour.

Stonehenge (From Oxford)

stonehenge - london oxford dublin and romeStraight after morning class, we will set off for a drive through the rolling hills and beautiful countryside of England to the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge.

Probably the best-known prehistoric monument in Europe, this impressive stone circle has an informative visitor’s centre which houses an interesting exhibition on the monument and the people who built it. Check out the Neolithic houses on the site which were built using authentic materials and techniques of the period 4,500 years ago. Study over 250 archaeological objects and treasures discovered in the local landscape ranging from jewellery and pottery to human bones.

We’ll have time to explore and learn about Stonehenge before having time to take in the views, before returning to Oxford for dinner.

Price: $180

Howth Head Peninsula (Dublin)

mixed image - london oxford dublin and romeEscape the city to explore the beautiful peninsula of Howth Head. This stretch of land offers stunning views across Dublin Bay, and has a pretty harbour full of fishing boats.

Leaving Dublin straight after morning class, we’ll take the train to Howth Station from where we have a short walk to Howth Castle, a privately owned estate. The house is not normally open to the public, but we will have a private tour! The castle has been home to the Gaisford-St. Lawrence family for over 800 years and has hosted some famous visitors including Queen Victoria, Bing Crosby and even Joan Rivers.

From the castle, we’ll be met by our knowledgeable guide for our hike of about 3 hours. We’ll pass through woodland, visit a Neolithic tomb with a folklore tale, climb to Muck Rock to take in a vista HG Wells once described as the ‘most beautiful view in the world’, then descend to the clifftops for panoramas of The Baily Lighthouse. Fresh sea air, exquisite nature and peaceful surrounding rejuvenate us!

Please bring a picnic lunch, snacks and water. Remember to wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather conditions.

Price: $100

Ostia Antica & Ostia Beach (Rome)

june 24 rome - london oxford dublin and romeA visit to Ostia is a relaxing day out that will take you away from the hustle, bustle and noise of Rome.

In the morning, with our guide, we’ll explore the expansive site of Ostia Antica, an area of Roman ruins which date from the early third century BC. Ostia became an important harbour town, supplying Rome. Over the years Ostia was struck by earthquakes and tsunamis. Instead of rebuilding ruins, the materials were often recycled, with Ostian marble even being used to build cathedrals in Pisa, Florence, Amalfi and Orvieto. The excavations here show many incredible layers of time.

To cool off after exploring the ruins, we will head to Lido di Ostia. Spend your time here at the beach swimming, sunbathing (or studying?!); exploring the shops; people watching in the cafes; or strolling along the promenade.

As we’ll be spending time at the beach, be sure to leave valuables at the hotel. While the town is on the coast, the ruins can get extremely hot, so wear layers. Also, wear sunscreen, comfortable shoes and a sun hat, and bring your beach apparel. We will return to Rome for dinner.
