STUDY ABROAD IN JAPAN
About This Program
The Land of the Rising Sun is truly a fusion of the ancient and modern, with feudal castles and tranquil rural landscapes juxtaposed with thriving metropolises on the cutting edge of technology and fashion.
Tokyo offers a seemingly unending choice of shopping, entertainment, culture, and dining. Get up early to see the bustling Fish Market, visit Tokyo National Museum, and study in the many city gardens.
Retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life to the quiet town of Hakone located in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. It’s a misty mountainous town known for its hot springs and iconic views of Mount Fuji. The natural surroundings provide great opportunities for hiking and boating.
Kyoto, undoubtedly Japan’s cultural epicentre, gives visitors the chance to explore the impressive Pure Water Temple and Golden Pavilion by day. By night, the Gion district comes to life ablaze with lights, colours, and geisha.
Although infamous as the site of the world’s first atomic bomb attack during the Second World War, Hiroshima is now a modern metropolis, featuring the beautiful Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a quiet spot to reflect on war and the changing world.
Kagoshima is a seaside town along Kinko Bay with spectacular views of the Sakurajima volcano. A boat ride to the volcanic island brings students to the observatory to get an up-close view of the active smoke spewing from the summit. A day at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Sengan-en Park and the Shoko Shuseikan stately home, reveal 350 years of history and a glimpse into the life of powerful ancient Japanese feudal lord, Shimazu Nariakira.
In Osaka, Japan’s second-largest city, students can stroll the buzzing districts of Dōtonbori, where walls of neon signs flash over the canal and take classes in Osaka Castle Park.
INTERESTING FACT: Tipping in Japan is not customary. In many instances, it can be considered insulting and may be politely refused. A simple bow is a respectable way to say thank you for the service. Only students aged 15-19 are eligible for this study abroad program.
