About This Program
The land of the rising sun is truly a fusion of the ancient and modern, with feudal castles and tranquil rural landscapes juxtaposed with thriving metropolises on the cutting edge of technology and fashion. There’s no better way to get a true feel for the different facets of this spectacular country than to stay in a mix of guest houses, hostels and hotels, and gain an understanding of local customs in each new location.
Every city in Japan has its own unique vibe and culture. Although infamous as the site of the world’s first atomic bomb attack during the Second World War, Hiroshima is now a modern metropolis, featuring the beautiful Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a quiet spot to reflect on war and the changing world.
In Osaka, Japan’s second-largest city, students can stroll the buzzing districts of Dōtonbori, where walls of neon signs flash over the canal, and take classes in Osaka Castle Park.
Kyoto, undoubtedly Japan’s cultural epicentre, gives visitors the chance to explore impressive temples and magnificent shrines by day, including the highlights of Golden Pavilion and Pure Water Temple. By night, the Gion district comes to life ablaze with lights, colours, and geisha, the professional entertainers trained in Japanese arts and dressed in colourful kimonos.
Tokyo offers a seemingly unending choice of shopping, entertainment, culture, and dining. Get up early to see the bustling Tsukiji Fish Market, visit Tokyo National Museum, and study in the many city gardens.
A journey through Japan should be infused with excursions to beaches, long soaks in natural hot springs, known as onsen, and tastes of wonderful cuisine. Must-see stops include hikes on the stunning Mount Fuji, and through Miyajima Island and its Itsukushima Shrine, known for the “floating” torii gate.
Japan offers visitors a wistful gaze into the past and a glimpse of the future to come—a truly remarkable destination for learning and growing.
