About This Study Abroad Program
The land of art, philosophy, architecture, fabulous food, and fashion, Italy has the largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the planet and has often been described as one big living museum.
Siena, Italy’s best-preserved medieval city, is home to one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in all of Europe, the Duomo di Siena. Its red brick buildings encircle the fan-shaped central piazza, where you’ll find the impressive Torre del Mangia. A visit to Siena in the summer would be incomplete without viewing the Palio, a heart-stopping horse race between competing civic wards held annually in the Piazza del Campo, the historic square in the city centre.
To the Tuscan north is Florence, surrounded by vineyard-covered hills and valleys. In the birthplace of the Renaissance, visitors slowly stroll the banks of the Arno River, take in the vistas from Piazzale Michelangelo, and enjoy some delicious gelato. A day excursion to Venice lends the opportunity to stroll Piazza San Marco and the cobblestone alleyways, canals and bridges of this famous city.
Hop on a short ferry ride to Sardinia and relax on the island’s expansive beaches, which have sand so soft that local authorities have had to ban tourists from taking it with them! Enjoy the peace and take the opportunity to study and rest, or venture out on an optional excursion to the impressive stalactite cave of Neptune’s Grotto.
No program in Italy could possibly end without seeing the Eternal City of Rome. Explore the majesty of the Roman Empire at the celebrated Colosseum and the Forum, and visit Vatican City to view its museums and the glorious Sistine Chapel.
Italy is also home to some of the best shopping on earth, so be sure to leave room in your suitcase for all the treasures you’ll acquire in this storied country.
SPECIAL PROGRAM NOTE: Make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes! Many of the places we visit in Italy will be discovered on foot.

True Taste of Tuscany (Afternoon)
Come and enjoy an afternoon savouring the best that Tuscany has to offer!
We will depart from our hotel in Siena by private coach to a villa situated on an ancient farm. This working farm produces everything from vegetables and local specialty cheeses to extra virgin olive oil.
Upon arrival, we will be given a guided tour of the farm to see the how the products are made before we sit down for a tasty lunch.
Our authentic Tuscan lunch will be a traditional meal of antipasta, first course, second course and dessert. Mangiamo!
Tower of Pisa and San Gimignano (Full-day)
Come and discover why this tower leans!
Our full day excursion will depart Siena in the morning for a visit to the famed Leaning Tower of Pisa, a UNESCO Heritage Site. We will climb the tower to see the view from up top and then visit the Cathedral of Pisa afterwards. There will be lots of time for us to take some memorable (and funny!) photos of this unique building. Start thinking of some funny poses now!
After the lunch break, we will then continue on to the walled medieval town of San Gimingano where we will climb up the towers and walk the medieval walls. Students will be given plenty of free time to explore the winding cobbled streets, galleries, cafes and shops before we head back to our hotel in Siena.
We will be back in Siena for dinner.
Neptune Cave & La Palosa Beach (Afternoon)
We will depart from our hotel by private coach for the area near Alghero in Sardinia where we will find Neptune’s Grotto, a spectacular stalactite cave. As a group, we will descend over 650 steps carved into the rock while watching the waves crash below. Once inside, we will be given a guided tour through this incredible cave discovered by fishermen in the 1800’s.
Once our tour is done we will re-board our coach for an afternoon at La Pelosa Beach in Stintino, considered by many to be the most beautiful beach in Sardinia. We will enjoy the remainder of our day resting on the fine white sand and playing in the crystal clear waters. Behind us, we will find the Aragonese tower built in the 1500’s which can be reached on foot through the waters. Swimsuits and towels will be mandatory on this one!
We will return to our hotel for dinner.
Pompeii & Sperlonga Beach (Full-day)
Nestled at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, is Pompeii. Throughout the height of the Roman Empire, it was quite the lively city. As a result of a volcanic eruption, the town was covered in molten lava and ultimately “frozen in time.”
The city lay silent for almost two thousand years, until it as excavated hundreds of years later. A picture of life in Roman times was revealed.
What lay beneath was the town of Pompeii, perfectly preserved as a result of the layer of volcanic ash that had covered it for centuries. Today it remains one of the most compelling archaeological sites and by far one of the most visited Italian attractions.
Visiting Pompeii is an incredible experience. We will take a guided tour of the site, where we will see the houses, theatres, arenas, temples, and public buildings where its original inhabitants lived, worked, played, and worshipped.
Following our visit to Pompeii, we will head to the beach to cool off in the breathtaking waters of Sperlonga Beach. Students can relax in the sun and swim, or take a walk around the picturesque town.
We will depart from Rome after breakfast and drive approximately two hours south to Pompeii. We will return to Rome in time for a late dinner at the hotel.
Hydromania Waterpark (Afternoon)
Enjoy an unforgettable afternoon at Hydromania, Rome, one of Italy’s best waterparks!
We’ll be picked up after lunch by private coach for our 30-minute transfer to this tropical oasis. There’s a wave pool, a fitness pool where music and dance parties happen, a Jacuzzi, a regular pool for those who want to do some lengths and several adrenalin-inducing waterslides! Whether you choose to race down the ‘Tangle’, ‘Toboggan’, ‘Black Hole’, ‘K2’ and the multi-slide, or prefer to chill under one of the poolside parasols, you’ll have a fun-filled experience.
This is a great escape from Rome’s heat and the perfect place to release some stress before our final exam!
On site: refreshments are available for purchase, lockers are available for rent (though we recommend leaving valuables at the hotel), showers are available for a small fee, change-rooms are available for free. Please bring your swimwear and a towel. There are stalls selling items such as sunscreen, hats, and flip-flops should you forget these.
Ostia Beach (Full Day)
Enjoy a day at the beach and do as the Romans do on their Sundays, and head to Lido di Ostia (lido the Italian word for beach). This ancient town was the launching port for the Roman naval assaults throughout the Empire.
Today it is a busy and fun coastal area within easy reach Italy’s capital. Some might say it is the Riviera of the Romans.
We will depart Rome after an early breakfast and spend a full day on the beach at Ostia, approximately a one hour journey. Immerse yourself in a full day of swimming, relaxing on the sand, perusing through the shops in town or even challenging your friends to some beach volleyball.
We will be returning back to Rome later in the afternoon, just in time for dinner at the hotel.
