Grand Tour East & Rome and the Greek Islands 2018 Blyth Academy International Summers Program

About This study abroad Program

Ireland, England and Italy
A tour through some of classical literature’s most inspirational cities and towns, this program will be a treat for the academics at heart.

Settle in at the historic Trinity College in Dublin and explore the campus in the heart of the city. Use your Dublin Pass to join a hop-on, hop-off bus tour and choose which of the top attractions to visit, including the Guinness Storehouse, the trendy Temple Bar neighbourhood, the Viking museum, and the shops of Grafton Street, just steps from your residence.

Travel across Ireland to the laid-back and friendly west-coast town of Galway. Visit the awe-inspiring Cliffs of Moher, enjoying coastal walks along the rugged cliffs, and spend time beachcombing along the Atlantic coast, and listening to live music filling the streets.

In London, stay at Imperial College, take in St. Paul’s Cathedral, and study Shakespeare while visiting the stage his plays were created for at the Globe theatre. Explore the British Museum before learning the history of the Tower of London and viewing the Crown Jewels inside.

Travel to Oxford, the city of dreaming spires, and take up residence at St Hilda’s College, the perfect home base for exploring this historic university. Visit the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, and punt down the River Cherwell.

Step into another time in Rome, the Eternal City, and see all of the important sites, from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum to Trevi Fountain, the Vatican and its Sistine Chapel, and the Spanish Steps. Opt to visit Ostia Beach and the Ostia Antica ruins, and feast on Italian cuisine before saying ciao to your classical tour.

Florence
Rising up from the Tuscan countryside is the breathtaking city of Florence, Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance.

One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Florence boasts walkable cobblestone streets that play host to countless works of art and architecture, bustling outdoor markets, and innumerable piazzas filled with locals sipping espresso in the morning sun—not to mention awe-inspiring and iconic sites like the Duomo.

Students will enjoy sunrises over Piazzale Michelangelo, sunsets on the Ponte Vecchio, and visits to the city’s ubiquitous trattorias and gelaterias. Visit the world-renowned Uffizi Gallery, home to classical masterpieces, and the Galleria dell’Accademia, the site of Michelangelo’s David; people-watch from the banks of the Arno River; climb to the rooftop of the awe-inspiring Santa Maria del Fiore, the third-largest church in the world; and picnic in parks and gardens.

Optional excursions allow students several opportunities to get to know Italy a little better, including an exhilarating day out in the Tuscan town of Siena for the Palio, a horse race held since medieval times, pitting neighbourhood against neighbourhood in a bareback race around the Piazza del Campo.

Perhaps choose a day in Venice, the beautiful City of Canals, and visit the Rialto Bridge, Grand Canal, and St. Mark’s Square; spend a day in Rome, visiting the impressive Colosseum and Roman Forum; or opt to relax on the sandy shores of a Mediterranean beach for a little fun in the Italian sun.

SPECIAL PROGRAM NOTE: While in Dublin, students will stay in student residence at the historic Goldsmith Residence at Trinity College, which includes private bedrooms in shared apartments with open common areas and fully equipped kitchen facilities. The group will have access to the College’s surround 35 acres of cobblestone and green space. In Florence, students will be staying in the private student residence at our Blyth Academy Florence campus, in the heart of the city.
