Grand Tour East & Rome and the Greek Islands 2018 Blyth Academy International Summers Program

About This study abroad Program

Grand Tour Europe: East
This study abroad program offers a diverse array of sounds, sights, tastes, and topographies of European cities, towns, castles, mountains, and monuments. From ancient ruins to contemporary cities, experience a variety of European cultures in one unforgettable summer abroad.

Berlin, Germany, is a modern, pulsating metropolis with a large arts scene sprung from the rubble of the Berlin Wall. Visit historic sites like the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie, a symbol of Berlin’s past and present. Take in the city’s saturated street art, and relax in the beautiful Tiergarten Park. To the south is Munich, the birthplace of Oktoberfest and packed with Bavarian culture—and bratwurst! Explore picturesque parks nestled among the walkable city centre before stopping at the town hall to watch the famous glockenspiel show that chimes and re-enacts stories from the 16th century.

In Poland, explore Krakow’s old town with help from a knowledgeable local guide. Head out of the city to spend a somber afternoon at Auschwitz, the largest of the Nazi concentration camps.

Climb to the beautiful Alpine village of Zermatt, Switzerland, and hike in the shadow of the magnificent Matterhorn before rewarding yourself with a dip into a traditional Swiss fondue.

Bask in the architecture and ruins of the Roman Empire and medieval Europe in some of the continent’s oldest sites. In Prague, the “city of a hundred spires,” enjoy unforgettable views from Letná Park.

Visit Venice, with its famous Grand Canal and gondolas. Positioned across 118 islands and boasting no roads, only canals linked by bridges, this city is like no other.

On the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia, stroll the sunny streets of Split, a town known for its beaches and impressive Roman monument, the Diocletian’s Palace.

Board an overnight ferry across the Adriatic Sea and awaken in beautiful Rome, with its ancient Colosseum and Roman Forum, without which a tour of this proportion would be incomplete.

Rome & The Greek Islands
What better way to learn about the history of civilization than in the birthplaces of two of the world’s most formative empires, Rome and Greece? Here, the history books come to life!

In Rome, explore the Colosseum and Roman Forum, and learn how classical mythology and philosophy shaped Western civilization. Discover beauty at the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, and learn about power and grandeur in Vatican City. While in Italy, consider taking the opportunity to visit Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance.

Visit Athens and discover both classical and modern Greece. Hike through the Acropolis and take in the glory of the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike. We’ll explore the shops in its lively marketplace, Plaka, which is teeming with cafés, restaurants, and night-life. Study this ancient city, where so much history comes to life in local museums and galleries. From here, optional excursions will be offered to Olympia, the site of the first Olympic Games, and Sparta.

Leave the land behind and board private sailboats for sailing and learning in the Argo-Saronic Islands. As you explore this unique archipelago, each island offers a stunning backdrop for your studies.

Head ashore in Kalamata, and relax on the beautiful beaches of the Peloponnese. Before heading home, celebrate Greek culture and food at a farewell banquet.

SPECIAL PROGRAM NOTE: Keep in mind, the fast-paced itinerary in July makes prioritizing rest and getting adequate sleep important in each country we explore. Students will break up into small groups to board cabin cruise sailboats in the Greek Islands for two nights and three days before rejoining as a whole group in Kalamata.

Pompeii & Sperlonga Beach (Full Day)

PompeiiNestled at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, is Pompeii. Throughout the height of the Roman Empire, it was quite a lively city. As a result of a volcanic eruption, the town was covered in molten lava and ultimately “frozen in time.”

The city lay silent for almost two thousand years, until it as excavated hundreds of years later. A picture of life in Roman times was revealed.

What lay beneath was the town of Pompeii, perfectly preserved as a result of the layer of volcanic ash that had covered it for centuries. Today it remains one of the most compelling archaeological sites and by far one of the most visited Italian attractions.

Visiting Pompeii is an incredible experience. We will take a guided tour of the site, where we will see the houses, theatres, arenas, temples, and public buildings where its original inhabitants lived, worked, played, and worshipped.

Following our visit to Pompeii, we will head to the beach to cool off in the breathtaking waters of Sperlonga Beach. Students can relax in the sun and swim, or take a walk around the picturesque town.

Some might say it is the Riviera of the Romans.

We will depart Rome after an early breakfast and spend a full day on the beach at Ostia, approximately a one hour journey. Immerse yourself in a full day of swimming, relaxing on the sand, perusing through the shops in town or even challenging your friends to some beach volleyball.

Archaeological Site of Olympia (Full-day)

Olympia - Rome & Greek Islands Optional ExcursionOlympia is on the western coast of the Peloponnese in southern Greece. The ancient city was like many others, with one exciting exception: the Olympics! Ancient Olympia had two parts: the city and the Olympics fields situated on the mountains above. The Olympic Sanctuary consists of an unordered arrangement of various buildings. The temples of Hera and Zeus, the Pelopion and the altars were all sites of sacrifice.

Olympia is also known for the gigantic ivory and gold statue of Zeus, sculpted by Phidias. Named one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Antipater of Sidon, we will visit the site on which it once stood. Nearby is the alleged studio of Phidias which was excavated in the 1950’s. Evidence found there, such as sculptor’s tools, corroborates this opinion. The ancient ruins sit north of the Alfeios River and lie next to Kronios Hill, the area of the city formerly dedicated to Kronos or Saturn. The Kladeos River, a tributary of the Alfeios, flows around the area-creating a beautiful setting for our afternoon.

The Olympic flame for today’s Olympic Games travels every four years from the city. It is lit by reflection of sunlight in a parabolic mirror at the restored Olympia stadium, and then transported by torch to the place where the games will be held.

The group will depart from the hotel in Kalamata after breakfast. We will spend the day exploring the ancient ruins and learning what life was like during the Greek Empire.

A favorite excursion among our students!

The group will depart from Kalamata in the morning by bus and return in time for dinner.

We will have time to explore the ruins, including the fortress, palace, churches, and monasteries.

In contrast to the city of Mystras, we will then travel to the modern day city of Sparta built upon the site of Ancient Sparta. Students will be given free time to walk the tree-lined boulevards and explore the town. We will stop for a photo opportunity at the Statue of the legendary and courageous King Leonidas.
