Grand Tour Asia 2018 Blyth Academy International Summers Program

About this study abroad Program

Explore the bustling city of Hong Kong, be awed by sacred temples in Cambodia and Thailand, trek through spectacular mountain scenery, and take a riverboat cruise from Laos to Thailand. During this once-in-a-lifetime program, you’ll experience fascinating cultures, ancient ceremonies, astounding architecture, and modern city life.

The adventure begins in Hong Kong, where you can barter like a local in incredible markets, experience the Symphony of Lights harbourfront show, and visit the Po Lin Monastery, home to the Big Buddha. Enjoy a hike along the nature trails and view the fantastic panoramas of The Peak, and have the option to take an evening harbour cruise.

Experience the quiet calm of Cambodia’s Angkor Archaeological Park, and watch the sun rise over temples and explore ancient ruins.

Prepare to fall in love with Laos, and its beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang, a patchwork town of traditional Laotian and French colonial architecture dotted with golden-roofed temples and orange-clad monks, and surrounded by lush green mountains.

Stay in a Zen-like state on the gorgeous island of Ko Samui in the Gulf of Thailand, with plenty of time to relax on beautiful beaches while studying and learning the local cultures and customs.

Make your way back to Hong Kong where the program ends with a banquet in the heart of China’s most iconic city.

This program offers plenty of chances to get your adrenalin flowing, with snorkelling in clear azure waters, visits to stunning waterfalls, and a cruise along the Mekong River, as well as options to kayak through rapids, zip line through treetops, and dive in some of the best sites on earth before heading home with a new appreciation for Buddha, balance, and beauty.

Countryside Cycling (Siem Reap, Cambodia)

Countryside Cycling - Optional Excursion AsiaDeparting after lunch, take a leisurely ride (3hrs) in the srok srai Khmer (Cambodian countryside) along red soil roads. Ride through rice fields, seeing farmers at work, and small villages. Stop and pay a visit to some of these traditional Khmer stilt houses and pagodas, built with wood, bamboo and palm, and chat with the local people.

After a while you will take a rest and try some local drinks such as sugar cane juice; a refreshing drink poured over ice, which is drunk by every Cambodian and is especially popular in the countryside.

Return to Siem Reap in time for dinner.

Please wear comfortable shoes (no flip-flops) and conservative clothing for cycling through the villages. Bike, helmet, and English-speaking guide included. Please wear sunscreen, sunglasses and bring a water-bottle.

Price: $50

Elephant Sanctuary (Luang Prabang, Laos)

Elephant Sanctuary - Optional Excursion AsiaThis is a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors to Laos. This recently opened sanctuary truly puts the elephants first!

The seven elephants that call the sanctuary home were previously logging elephants, and are learning again to act like elephants, grazing through the forest and in paddocks. There is no riding on the elephants, tricks or shows, and it is rare to see elephants like this in a country where elephants are predominantly used in the logging or tourist trekking industries.

This elephant experience is focused on education and animal welfare. We will learn about elephant behaviour, ecology and conservation efforts. We’ll take a boat upriver to assist the elephants with their morning bath, before trekking alongside the elephants through the jungle.

We’ll enjoy a traditional-style lunch, take a swim beside a waterfall and visit a local village while the elephants have their lunch. Then we’ll trek back to the elephant’s nighttime feeding grounds, say our goodbyes and return to base for snacks and de-brief.

We return to Luang Prabang at 4.30pm. Please bring: a hat, camera, swimwear and a towel. We recommend wearing clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy. Water, sunscreen and bug spray provided on request.

Price: $300

Kayaking (Luang Prabang, Laos)

Kayaking - Optional Excursion AsiaWe’ll leave Luang Prabang after class to enjoy a drive through the local countryside to our starting point of this river adventure.

In the shadow of mountains, surrounded by jungle, we will paddle along the river with several traditional villages on the river banks. We’ll even tackle some exciting river rapids! We rest along the banks for photos, river-jumping and swimming.

We will be guided by a knowledgeable local English-speaking guide. All equipment is provided.
Please bring: sunscreen, swimsuit, a change of clothes, a towel, flip-flops/water-friendly shoes, and a water bottle.

Price: $100

'Try Scuba' Dive for Non-Certified Divers (Koh Samui, Thailand)

Certified Diving - Optional Excursion AsiaThe Try Dive program allows you to experience the thrill of diving under close supervision of experienced instructors in calm pool-like conditions.

Nothing compares with the sensation of breathing underwater and floating effortlessly above coral reef with tropical fish swimming around you.

During the class, you’ll master some of the basic scuba concepts and skills, before we take a boat excursion for two dives in shallow sheltered settings. This is chosen based on the weather and conditions of the day.
Dive equipment, snacks, soft drinks and Marine Park Fee included. Please bring a towel and swimwear.

Please have the waiver signed prior to departure.

Price: $375

2 Tank Dive Trip for Certified Divers (Koh Samui, Thailand)

Please remember to bring your license and log book with you.

Please have the waiver signed prior to departure.

This boat, built locally using ancient techniques and made exclusively from wood, has no metal nails to hold the structure together. Its Chinese name is Cheung Po, named after a Qing dynasty Chinese pirate.
