About this Study Abroad Program
Rising up from the Tuscan countryside is the breathtaking city of Florence, Italy, the birthplace of the Renaissance.
One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Florence boasts walkable cobblestone streets that play host to countless works of art and architecture, bustling outdoor markets, and innumerable piazzas filled with locals sipping espresso in the morning sun—not to mention awe-inspiring and iconic sites like the Duomo.
Students will enjoy sunrises over Piazzale Michelangelo, sunsets on the Ponte Vecchio, and visits to the city’s ubiquitous trattorias and gelaterias. Visit the world-renowned Uffizi Gallery, home to classical masterpieces, and the Galleria dell’Accademia, the site of Michelangelo’s David; people-watch from the banks of the Arno River; climb to the rooftop of the awe-inspiring Santa Maria del Fiore, the third-largest church in the world; and picnic in parks and gardens.
Optional excursions allow students several opportunities to get to know Italy a little better, including an exhilarating day out in the Tuscan town of Siena for the Palio, a horse race held since medieval times, pitting neighbourhood against neighbourhood in a bareback race around the Piazza del Campo.
Perhaps choose a day in Venice, the beautiful City of Canals, and visit the Rialto Bridge, Grand Canal, and St. Mark’s Square; spend a day in Rome, visiting the impressive Colosseum and Roman Forum; or opt to relax on the sandy shores of a Mediterranean beach for a little fun in the Italian sun.
SPECIAL PROGRAM NOTE: Students will be staying in the private student residence at our Blyth Academy Florence campus, in the heart of the city. Accommodations include spacious shared dorm rooms with a fully equipped communal kitchen and open common areas.

Tower of Pisa (Half-day)
Come and discover why this tower leans!
We will depart Florence in the morning by train for a visit to the famed Leaning Tower of Pisa, a UNESCO Heritage Site. We will climb the tower to see the view from up top and then visit the Cathedral of Pisa afterwards. There will be lots of time for us to take some memorable (and funny!) photos of this unique building. Start thinking of some funny poses now!
Travel through the beautiful terrain and landscape of Italy’s Arno Valley to make your way to Pisa. A guided tour will allow for absorption of the history, art and landscape of the town.
Walking through the bright and lively streets and squares of the old town, including Piazza die Miracoli will leave you in amazement!
Castiglioncello Beach (Full-day)
Enjoy a day at the beach in the sophisticated town of Castiglioncello. Once a magnet for movie stars, the beaches of Castiglioncello became famous in the sixties thanks to the film “Il Sorpasso” with Vittorio Gassman. Today Castiglioncello is a bustling coastal town, its elegant beaches still favoured by the locals.
We will depart Florence after an early breakfast and spend a full day on the beach at Castiglioncello. Immerse yourself in a full day of swimming, relaxing on the sand, perusing through the shops in town or even challenging your friends to some beach volleyball.
We will be returning back to Florence later in the afternoon, just in time for dinner at the residence.
Siena for the Palio (Full-day)
Enjoy an exhilarating day out in the Tuscan town of Siena for the Palio, a horse race held since medieval times, pitting neighbourhood against neighbourhood in a bareback race around the Piazza del Campo!
We will depart Florence at noon by private coach, arriving in Siena, approximately an hour journey. In the early afternoon we will experience the colourful Corteo Storico, a historical costume parade held just before the big race!
After a full day immersing ourselves in ancient traditions, we will return to Florence in the evening.
Enjoy a full day exploring the Eternal City! When in Rome, we will do as the Romans do! This will include highlights of the Roman Empire, such as the ancient Colosseum and Roman Forum. While wandering the streets with some gelato, we will see the Spanish Steps and be able to throw a coin in Trevi Fountain.
The capital of Italy is such a vibrant and busy city, there is always something fun to do or see!
We will depart our residence in Florence just after breakfast and arrive in beautiful Rome early in the morning.
After a full day learning how classical mythology and philosophy shaped Western civilization, we will depart Rome and return to Florence in the late evening.
Take a step out of honking cars and step into the famous city of gondolas and the world’s only pedestrian city. Venice, positioned across 118 islands and boasting no roads, only canals linked by bridges, is a city like no other!
We will spend a day in the beautiful City of Canals, with a guided tour visiting the Rialto Bridge, Grand Canal, and St. Mark’s Square.
Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square) is a sight to be seen, with its strolling musicians, historic basilica, and bell tower that was last restored in 1514. Under the midday sun, we will see the clock tower’s striking deep blue and gold mosaics and winged lion, the symbol of Venice.
After a full day meandering the alleys and bridges of Venice and revelling in the sounds of the enchanting city, we will return by train to our residence in Florence in the late evening.
