About This study abroad Program
Situated just off the coast of Mexico’s storied Mayan Riviera lies the island of Cozumel, a Caribbean ecological paradise offering a remarkable diversity of ocean life, beautiful beaches, mangrove forests, and Mayan ruins to explore.
First settled by the Maya as a sacred place of the moon goddess Ix Chel, Cozumel is a short ferry ride from Cancun and Playa del Carmen and offers abundant opportunities to enjoy swimming, tennis, volleyball, and runs along the beach in the Caribbean sunshine, all while studying poolside under beach umbrellas.
Take a break from studying and spend a half day taking care of furry friends at one of our community partners—and earn your high school Community service hours for participating! All students will cuddle, feed, brush and care for the island’s strays at a local animal shelter.
Step away from the sandy shores and explore the town of San Miguel for a taste of Cozumel’s culture, with its quirky shops, a theatre, and an entertaining history museum. Rejuvenate with yoga sessions, learn Spanish, practise your footwork with salsa lessons, and head offshore for a sunset cruise on a catamaran.
Optional excursions abound, with the opportunity to experience the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ocean lovers will jump at the chance to scuba dive on a taster dive or a PADI certification course, and swim with whale sharks, a perfect way to cap off your time in this Mexican paradise.
SPECIAL PROGRAM NOTES: When purchasing sunscreen, look for biodegradable creams and avoiding products that contain the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, which can effect Cozumel’s underwater ecosystem.

Chichen Itza Full Day Excursion
The ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza are Mexico’s most famous archaeological site. It is the best example of the Mayan Civilization and is an essential element in understanding their culture. Located in the Yucatan, Chichen Itza offers a well preserved and dramatic example of a Mayan City which is both beautiful and easily understood. A visit here definitely complements the local sites in Cozumel.
Our full day excursion beings with a boat ride from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen and then a coach trip, of about 2 hours, to Chichen Itza. Lunch will be served on site and a private tour, that will surely bring the experience to life, will follow. Castillo de Kukulkan, which means the Castle of Kukulkan, the Feathered Serpent God, is probably the most recognized pyramid in the world. Incredibly, this pyramid has four stairways each with 91 steps plus one step at the top which is common to all four sides for a total of exactly 365 steps – the exact number of days in a solar year.
On the return trip, we will stop at one of the Mayan Riviera’s famed cenotes (sinkhole) for a freshwater swim beneath waterfalls and vines before boarding our boat and returning to our island home on Cozumel.
Saddle up and embark on an unforgettable ride through the jungles and Savanna of Cozumel.
We will begin our ride in the jungle as we take in all of the flora and fauna that make this area so unique. For those of you that are interested in some more speed, there will be ample time for that once we enter the open grasslands of the Savanna. Here, we will ride up to ancient caves and the famous sinkholes Cozumel is known for.
All in all, it will be a terrific day to experience the natural wonders of the Island.
PADI Certification Course
This program takes a beginner through to a full PADI dive certificate including the four required open water dives and all the necessary classroom components.
The fee includes the book, equipment and certification fee. Students will be taught in groups of six or less and classes are held in the afternoons of the first week. With this, you’ll be ready to do some of the greatest diving in the world.
*Medical form required.
This half day trip will introduce you to a wide range of the underwater life of the reef, much of which can be seen from the surface as a result of water clarity that often exceeds 100 feet. Well preserved corals and vast quantities of fish of every shape and colour make this memorable and instructive.
Equipment is included.
*Medical form required.
Swimming with Whale Sharks
Swim up close in the natural environment of the Gulf of Mexico with the ocean’s largest fish: the whale shark! These huge sea creatures are found off the coast of Holbox Island.
The whale sharks are harmless & non-threatening to humans. In fact, they seem to enjoy their interaction with people.
We will leave our hotel in Cozumel and take the ferry to the mainland. From there we will travel to the marina where we will board a captained motor yacht and travel to Isla Holbox.
En route to the whale sharks, you will be treated to a viewing of the abundant sea and bird life found near Isla Holbox. On a typical day in these still waters, you might see a school of wild dolphins, flocks of flamingos, stingrays, ibis, egrets, pelicans, and much more.
Upon arrival at Isla Holbox, we will enter the water in small groups where everyone will have a chance to interact with these magnificent creatures.
Snorkel gear, masks, flippers, life-vests, snacks and drinks are provided.
