Spain & Rome and the Greek Islands 2018 Blyth Academy International Summers Program

About this study abroad Program

Grand Tour Asia
Explore the bustling city of Hong Kong, be awed by sacred temples in Cambodia and Thailand, trek through spectacular mountain scenery, and take a riverboat cruise from Laos to Thailand. During this once-in-a-lifetime program, you’ll experience fascinating cultures, ancient ceremonies, astounding architecture, and modern city life.

The adventure begins in Hong Kong, where you can barter like a local in incredible markets, experience the Symphony of Lights harbourfront show, and visit the Po Lin Monastery, home to the Big Buddha. Enjoy a hike along the nature trails and view the fantastic panoramas of The Peak, and have the option to take an evening harbour cruise.

Experience the quiet calm of Cambodia’s Angkor Archaeological Park, and watch the sunrise over temples and explore ancient ruins.

Prepare to fall in love with Laos, and its beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang, a patchwork town of traditional Laotian and French colonial architecture dotted with golden-roofed temples and orange-clad monks, and surrounded by lush green mountains.

Stay in a Zen-like state on the gorgeous island of Ko Samui in the Gulf of Thailand, with plenty of time to relax on beautiful beaches while studying and learning the local cultures and customs.

Make your way back to Hong Kong where the program ends with a banquet in the heart of China’s most iconic city.

This program offers plenty of chances to get your adrenaline flowing, with snorkelling in clear azure waters, visits to stunning waterfalls, and a cruise along the Mekong River, as well as options to kayak through rapids, zip line through treetops, and dive in some of the best sites on earth before heading home with a new appreciation for Buddha, balance, and beauty.

The land of the rising sun is truly a fusion of the ancient and modern, with feudal castles and tranquil rural landscapes juxtaposed with thriving metropolises on the cutting edge of technology and fashion.

Tokyo offers a seemingly unending choice of shopping, entertainment, culture, and dining. Get up early to see the bustling Tsukiji Fish Market, visit Tokyo National Museum, and study in the many city gardens.

Retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life to the quiet town of Hakone located in Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. It’s a misty mountainous town known for its hot springs and iconic views of Mount Fuji. The natural surroundings provide great opportunities for hiking and boating.

Kyoto, undoubtedly Japan’s cultural epicentre, gives visitors the chance to explore the impressive Pure Water Temple and Golden Pavilion by day. By night, the Gion district comes to life ablaze with lights, colours, and geisha.

Although infamous as the site of the world’s first atomic bomb attack during the Second World War, Hiroshima is now a modern metropolis, featuring the beautiful Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a quiet spot to reflect on war and the changing world.

Kagoshima is a seaside town along Kinko Bay with spectacular views of the Sakurajima volcano. A boat ride to the volcanic island brings students to the observatory to get an up-close view of the active smoke spewing from the summit. A day at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Sengan-en Park and the Shoko Shuseikan stately home, reveal 350 years of history and a glimpse into the life of powerful ancient Japanese feudal lord, Shimazu Nariakira.

In Osaka, Japan’s second-largest city, students can stroll the buzzing districts of Dōtonbori, where walls of neon signs flash over the canal and take classes in Osaka Castle Park.

SPECIAL PROGRAM NOTE: Monks are revered and respected in many parts of Asia. It’s important to give them space and always ask before taking a photo! Tipping in Japan is not customary. In many instances, it can be considered insulting and may be politely refused. A simple bow is a respectable way to say thank you for the service.
