Grand Tour East & Rome and the Greek Islands 2018 Blyth Academy International Summers Program

About This study abroad Program

Amazon & The Galapagos
Travel through the Ecuadorean Amazon basin and the Galapagos Islands, and experience some of the most uniquely biodiverse ecosystems on the planet.

The Galapagos archipelago, nearly 1,000 km (620 miles) off the coast of Ecuador, is a double UNESCO World Heritage Site, with both land and sea areas protected. The islands were the inspiration for Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution—and once you’re there, it’s easy to imagine why. Each features unique landscapes, ranging from volcanic rocks to sandy white beaches, and is home to animal species like giant tortoises, friendly sea lions, penguins, iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and huge albatross.

Take the opportunity to learn about these fascinating creatures at the Charles Darwin Research Station in Santa Cruz or the Galapagos Interpretation Center in San Cristóbal, swim in the Pacific, play beach sports, hike to panoramic viewpoints, and snorkel in stunning blue waters.

Continue your wildlife adventure of a lifetime in the Amazon basin—believed by many to be home to the most diverse ecosystem in the world, with thousands of species of plants, animals, fish, and insects. Take a rejuvenating dip in the Papallacta hot springs before arriving at a jungle eco-lodge on the shores of the Napo River. Hike along jungle trails, study poolside and take in the views from your terrace while chattering troops of monkeys swing by.

Our mainland tour will include stops throughout the Andes, including equatorial Puembo, Quito and the foothill town of Otavalo, each with picturesque public parks and squares, and local markets filled with fresh foods and artisanal treasures to barter over—the ideal place to find a souvenir to bring home as a reminder of your incredible summer in Ecuador.

Costa Rica
The North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica offers among the best and most easily accessible diving sites in the country, an abundance of marine life, and vast expanses of tropical dry forests that often line the darker sandy beaches that lend Playas del Coco its name.

Playas del Coco seems like a sleepy seaside town at first glance, but once you’ve familiarized yourself, you’ll find that it’s a friendly and lively place where tourists easily mix with locals and other travellers from around the globe. At night, the central plaza fills with people, food, laughter and dancing in the true pura vida spirit.

The beachside town and its private villas give students easy access to a variety of excursions, experiences, and natural wonders. Students will have the opportunity to hike inland trails, zip line above treetops, climb hanging bridges, relax in the mineral-rich hot springs, boat on the volcanic Lake Arenal, and swim along the idyllic coastline. Because Playas del Coco sits in a natural horseshoe-shaped bay, the waves here are easier to swim and snorkel in than other parts of the country, where the surf pounds the shore.

For those who want to get closer to nature and learn about its inner workings, this area is an ideal spot to get an up-close look at an array of animals, including many species of seabirds and monkeys, and the hundreds of sea turtles who come ashore to lay their eggs each year. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve provides the opportunity to learn about cloud forest ecology and the thousands of species connected to it. Nighttime hikes offer the chance to uncover nocturnal animals not visible during the day.

No visit to Costa Rica would be complete without a stop in Arenal Volcano National Park. Arenal is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. At over a mile high, it is studied by seismologists to chart the profound changes in our climate and the environment.

From micro to macro, Costa Rica is an exotic oasis that will enrich both knowledge and perspective
