About This Program
Consistently ranked one of the happiest countries on earth, Costa Rica is all about pura vida, the simple or pure life. Think hakuna matada! It’s the local way to live: no worries, no stress, just thankfulness for what you have—and the country’s inhabitants have a lot to be thankful for! Costa Rica boasts some of the world’s most diverse and undisturbed ecology, from lush tropical rainforests and cloud forests to volcanos, savannahs and sandy beaches. To travel through these distinct ecological zones is to see through a biological kaleidoscope.
Learn how the unique ecology of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve supports thousands of species of plants and animals. Search for nocturnal animals on a guided night hike, and howl back at the monkeys on a wildlife safari.
Study Costa Rica’s active Arenal volcano, a staggering 1,633 metres (5,357 feet) high, and learn how the world’s seismologists collect data about the climate and the environment from its unique features.
Take time to live pura vida in the tourist-friendly town of La Fortuna, a great base for class, shopping, and culture. Enjoy a night at a hot springs resort, say hello to slow-moving sloths, and enjoy a more relaxed way of life.
Pick up the pace in Guanacaste, home to some of the most expansive beaches—and friendly people—in Latin America. Explore the vast coastline, snorkel in the warm ocean waters, test out your surfing skills, and zip line through the treetops.
Return home knowing what pura vida truly feels like—an emotion, an attitude, pure happiness.

Surfing Lesson at Playa Grande
Costa Rica has long been a popular destination for surfers worldwide. Famous Playa Grande on the Pacific Coast is one of the favoured beaches for wave riders of all levels. Located in Las Baulas National Park, Playa Grande is a long white-sand beach offering stunning views of the surrounding natural marine park, which has been carefully preserved as it is a nesting site for huge leatherback turtles. The quiet beach is also an ideal destination to learn surfing as it is rarely crowded and provides consistent, ride-able waves with perfect left and right peaks.
We will leave Playas del Coco early in the morning for a short ride through coastal towns before arriving at Playa Grande. There we will be greeted by our surf instructors, who will provide equipment and go over the basics and safety of surfing this famous beach. Each student will receive individual attention and instructions before having the opportunity to conquer the waves on his/her own. Hang ten, and look out for those swells!
After a fun day of surfing, we will have lunch (included) in a nearby beach café, stroll through the marine park, and return to Playas del Coco in the afternoon.
