Our program in Nicaragua includes opportunities to contribute to the community, explore cool seaside towns, and hike towering volcanoes. In our free time, we’ll have the option to learn some Spanish and take a surf lesson at a gorgeous beach. We begin our adventure in San Juan del Sur, a picturesque town with a wide brown-sugar beach.

We first volunteer with Barrio Planta, an organization that gives low-income youth and adults new educational tools. We’ll add to their learning environment with workshops in drama and creative arts.

Then we’ll head to Granada, the country’s oldest Colonial city, and take in its remarkably restored architecture. We’ll experience the culture at the Masaya National Artisan Market and cruise the archipelago of tiny islands called the Isletas de Granada. Our community work in the city will be with La Esperanza, where we’ll strive to foster a love of learning through the tutoring of impoverished students. Our July participants will also travel to Ometepe Island, home to the Concepción and Maderas volcanoes. Here we’ll volunteer with Educación de Medio Ambiente de Ometepe (EMAO) to recycle plastic bottles into bricks for construction in order to preserve the natural environment. We’ll hike on Maderas Volcano, explore the cloud forest, and spot howler monkeys amongst the trees.

Before leaving this idyllic island, we’ll swim in the tranquil Ojo de Agua, a peaceful swimming hole nestled in the forest. We’ll end our adventure with a farewell banquet.

Included in your Program:

Cruise of the Isletas de Granada, visit to the Artisan Masaya Market, and volcano hike and swim in Ojo de Agua on Ometepe Island (July only).

Masaya Volcano Lava Rock Evening Tour, Granada

Experience the mysterious sights and sounds of the Masaya Volcano by night. Feared by both indigenous people and Spanish conquerors, the Masaya Volcano was baptized “La Boca del Infierno” or “The Mouth of Hell” by the Spanish.

Just before sunset we set off to the volcano where we hope to get a glimpse of green ‘chocoyos’ (parakeets) returning to their nests inside the volcano crater. These birds have amazingly adapted to withstand the sulfurous fumes emitted from the volcano. While the parakeets are returning home, the bats are just leaving their caves in their masses. What a remarkable sight!

We’ll don helmets and take a flashlight to explore the underground tunnel and rock formations formed by lava streams, before we end our visit to this majestic volcano with a hike to a viewpoint giving fantastic vistas of the crater mouth, which is continuously emitting smoke and sulfur gases, and allowing us to see a crater created by lava activity as recently as 2006!

Please wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring with you insect repellent, bottled water and a light jacket.
