(Sorry!)

Our launch point for this Asia adventure is Hong Kong, where we’ll experience incredible markets, a Symphony of Lights nighttime harbour front show, and a visit to the Po Lin Monastery, home to the Big Buddha. We’ll hike through the nature trails of The Peak and have the option to go to Disneyland Hong Kong.

A short flight will bring us to Cambodia. We’ll be based in Siem Reap, where we’ll view the vast temple complex of Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples – from Ta Prohm, enveloped in huge tree roots, to Bayon, decorated with huge carved smiling faces.

Next, we travel to Laos, and the town of Luang Prabang. We’ll tour Buddhist temples, seeing shrines and orange-clad monks. We’ll zip line through lush jungles and hike to local waterfalls. We also have the option to kayak one of the picturesque rivers.

We’ll take a boat cruise along the Mekong River to our final country, Thailand. We begin in the north in Chiang Rai Province, where we’ll trek into the hills to see tribal villages, and visit a night market.

Moving south, we arrive on the white sand beaches of Ko Lanta, an island along the west sunset coast. We’ll take class on the sand and snorkelling in the clear blue waters, and have the option of scuba diving at some of the best sites in the world.

Finally, we visit Ayutthaya, where we’ll take our final exam and enjoy a farewell banquet. Throughout this program we will also have several opportunities to participate in meaningful community work, volunteering in agricultural or educational projects.

Elephant Sanctuary (Chiang Rai, Thailand)

This is a one of a kind experience for visitors to Thailand. This newly opened sanctuary truly puts the elephants first!

The 3 elephants here (plus a baby on the way sometime between now and October, and an elephant recuperating from an operation) were previously logging elephants, and are learning again to act like elephants, grazing through forest and in paddocks. There is no riding of the elephants, tricks or shows, and it is rare to see elephants like this in a country where elephants are predominantly used in the logging or tourist trekking industries.

The sanctuary owners have run a successful sanctuary in Cambodia for 10 years and wanted to bring their ethos of elephant care to Thailand. The aim is to set an example of how to look after and treat elephants to other small camp owners.

The elephants love bananas – so if you can bring a few to help feed their insatiable appetite – that would be most welcome!

On this half day visit we will enjoy following, photographing and even feeding these majestic creatures. Our visit will include a Northern Thai style lunch and transportation.

Anticipated Date: Tuesday 18th July, 2017

Price: $125

Muay Thai Boxing Lesson (Koh Lanta, Thailand)

Muay Thai, Thailand’s national sport, is a martial art that exerts physical and mental discipline and is known as ‘the art of eight limbs’ as there are eight points of contact. Culturally important, it dates back to the 16th century and has several traditions – including pre-fight rituals and important items of dress. Here, children begin the sport as young as 6 years of age, though these days the recommendation is for non-contact sparring.

Competitors often have a high level of fitness, but for us, all that is required is enthusiasm to give this new sport a go. We’ll learn about the sport’s history, and the rules and scoring system, before we get active with a warm up, exercises, and some friendly sparring. We train with pads and our local instructor will teach us some of the basic skills of this highly technical sport.

All genders can participate.
